Location: The Public Library for Union County
Library: Lewisburg

The Adult Reading Group at The Public Library for Union County will meet at 7 p.m. on Thurs., Aug. 19, to discuss "A Sense of the World," by Jason Roberts. In this biography of James Holman (1786–1857), Roberts narrates the life of the 19th-century British naval officer who was blinded at 25, but who became one of the greatest travelers of his time. Holman entered the navy at age 12 at the height of the Napoleonic Wars. When blindness overcame him, he was an accomplished sailor, and he engineered to join the Naval Knights of Windsor, a quirky group whose members only had to live in quarters near Windsor Castle and attend mass for their stipend. Holman arranged leaves of absence from the Knights in order to wander the world from Paris to Canton without assistance, to study medicine at the University of Edinburgh, to hunt slavers off the coast of Africa, to get arrested by one of the czar’s elite bodyguards in Siberia, and to publish several best-selling travel memoirs. The Adult Reading Group’s meetings are free, informal, and open to the public. No registration is needed. For more information, visit the library at 255 Reitz Blvd. or call 523-1172.
