1 Summer Reading registration begins!June 1, 2010 - Summer Reading registration begins! Location: All Union County libraries Library: UCLS, Herr, Lewisburg, West-End Each year, the three Union County libraries offer free themed summer reading programs for children, teens, and even adults. Registration for these fun and educational programs begins on Tues., June 1, at The Public Library for Union County, the Herr Memorial Library, and the West End Library. Summer reading programs are a great way for children and teens to maintain or even to strengthen their reading skills over the summer months, and they offer a chance to relax and enjoy new activities while they keep learning. Adults benefit from reading too, of course, and they can even win prizes. The theme for this year’s summer reading programs for children is “Make a Splash @ Your Library.” In addition, The Public Library for Union County offers a teen program called “Make Waves @ Your Library,” and The Public Library for Union County and the West End Library also will conduct adult programs called "Water Your Mind @ Your Library." All three libraries are joining together to hold a free family event with a water theme. "The Big Splash" will take place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sat., June 12, at the Mifflinburg Community Park, and will include special presentations from the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission, Forgotten Friends Reptile Sanctuary, and Keith Phelps from Country Farm and Home Gift and Garden Center. A DJ from Tuxes 'n' Tunes will be there to keep the music flowing. Children will be able to romp and play on a big inflatable obstacle course, practice fly casting, get their faces painted, race rubber duckies, toss fish and dolphin rings, and even get wet during other activities such as water spray painting. A dunking booth will be set up by Mifflinburg Hose Co. No. 1, a balloon artist will take requests, and there will be plenty of food. The Millmont-West Union Area Lion's Club will offer hot dogs, the youth group from First Lutheran church in Mifflinburg will have ice cream, and library staff members and volunteers will make popcorn and cotton candy. While much is known about the Battle of Gettysburg, relatively little attention has been paid to the 2,400 civilians who were caught in the crossfire. They were mothers like Catherine Gerlach, who sat in her basement armed with an axe. They were teenagers like Daniel Skelly, who climbed a tree to watch the battle and later saw Robert E. Lee ride down Middle Street on his way to a council of war. These people assisted Union Soldiers, fed hungry rebels, and protected their African-American neighbors from capture. Dressed in Civil War-era garb, Patricia Anschuetz will communicate some of the experiences of the 1863 Gettysburg civilians during a theatrical presentation. As part of the 2010 Young Adult Summer Reading Program “Make Waves @ Your Library,” The Public Library for Union County is presenting a free "Books-to-Movies" series for young people ages 13 to 18. There are three books and three corresponding movies: "Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist," "Emma," and "Blood and Chocolate." Six copies of each book are available to check out from the library. Participants are asked to read the book first, then join Young Adult Program Coordinator Senami Lewis to watch the movie and discuss both works afterward. The books chosen for the Books-to-Movies program span a broad range of reading and maturity levels. The movies are rated either PG or PG-13. Parents are encouraged to take an active role in helping their teens choose materials and programs that fit best for them and their families. In 2006, David Levithan and Rachel Cohn collaborated to write "Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist," a young adult novel about two people thrust together for one funny, sleepless night of adventure in a world of mix tapes, late nights, and live music. In 2008 a coming-of-age comedy film based on the novel was released, directed by Peter Sollett and written by Lorene Scafaria. The movie, rated PG-13, stars Michael Cera as Nick, who frequents New York's indie rock scene nursing a broken heart and a vague ability to play the bass. Norah, played by Kat Dennings, is questioning pretty much all of her assumptions about the world. The movie will be shown at the library at 1 p.m. on Thurs., June 17. After the movie and popcorn, teens are invited to take part in a discussion.
